Real Madrid’s new signing thanks controversial figure during presentation
Dean Huijsen spoke for the first time as a Real Madrid player.

Dean Huijsen exudes calm—on the field and off it. He celebrates goals like someone who’s completely unfazed. And he speaks the same way. “I’m a chill guy,” he says with a smile.
He confirmed that Sergio Ramos—“my biggest idol, the best centre-back in history”—sent him a message when the deal was finalised. He’s also already had a brief conversation with Xabi Alonso. “We’ve talked a bit, about what he expects from me. ”No big declarations, no drama—just quiet confidence. “I fit well into Xabi’s style of football,” he says.
And being the most expensive centre-back in Real Madrid history (€67 million, surpassing Militao’s €57 million)? Doesn’t seem to bother him. “I don’t really care, so to speak,” he shrugs, flashing that same half-smile. The same one he wears during games. The same one he brings to this new chapter at Madrid. “It’s the club of my life,” he says.

Dean Huijsen’s press conference highlights
How does it feel? It’s obviously the best day of my life. It’s a dream to be here. I’ll give everything for the team.
Why number 24? And why Real Madrid? 24 was available, that’s all. As for the club—Madrid is the best in the world. There’s no other like it.
Have you spoken to Xabi Alonso? Yes, we’ve talked a bit—mostly about what he expects from me. I think we’re going to have some great years together.
What do you expect from yourself? I think I fit really well into Xabi’s football philosophy. I want to contribute however I can, and help the team in any way possible.
If someone told you at Christmas that you’d debut with Spain and sign for Madrid... Honestly, making my debut for Spain was a dream. And so is signing for Madrid. It’s all surreal.
Are you aware of the demands here? Do you feel ready? I think I’ve shown I’m ready. I’m here to help in whatever way I can. The goal is simple: I want to win everything. I’m very ambitious.
Everyone says you’re extremely calm. Yeah, I’m pretty laid-back. That’s just how I am. I’m doing what I love most. I give it my all and stay humble. That’s my way.
Did Ramos reach out? Yeah, he messaged me the day it became official. He’s my biggest idol, the best centre-back in history. I couldn’t pick just one thing I admire—it’s everything.

Is your ball distribution something natural or learned? I think it’s a bit of both. I’ve always had the ability to play out from the back, but I’ve also worked hard to improve. No one club in particular—it’s been a gradual process.
What was your Plan B if Madrid didn’t call? There was a lot of talk, but I stayed focused on Bournemouth and finishing the season strong.
Was Mourinho’s call decisive in your move? That call came during Christmas dinner. When Mourinho calls, you listen. I’m eternally grateful, he’s one of the greats, no question.
What did you feel standing with your parents at the presentation? It was a dream moment. My family is proud of me—and I’m proud too. I don’t care what number I wear, as long as it’s for Real Madrid.
What’s your first memory of Ramos? The 2014 Champions League final. Ramos scored in the final minute. I was nine—that’s my earliest memory.
Does the €59 million price tag weigh on you? Honestly, not really. I don’t think about it. I just try to give my best.
You know Julián Araújo—have you two spoken? Yeah, he’s a good friend. We’ve talked a bit—he’s a really good player.
What do you want to improve? Everything. There’s always something to work on. That’s the mindset I’m taking.
Who was the first teammate to reach out? A couple guys messaged me. Everyone’s been really nice. I’m looking forward to meeting them all soon.
How are you handling the pressure? I just focus on playing. I’m pretty relaxed about it. I’m living my dream and doing what I love. That’s what matters.
