Update:

The Cleveland Browns kicked off mandatory minicamp this week, but it wasn’t just the veterans who made headlines. Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders showed up with a tight spiral, a sharp mind, and a pointed refusal to be anything but professional..

Coming off a highly scrutinized college career – and an even more high-profile upbringing as the son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders – Shedeur’s transition into the NFL spotlight was never going to be quiet. Yet, it’s the way he’s managing the noise that’s setting him apart.

Shedeur handles questions about Deion’s health

News broke on Tuesday that Sanders Sr, head coach at the University of Colorado and one of college football’s most recognizable figures, is away from the team dealing with an undisclosed health matter. His son Shedeur was immediately asked about it at Browns camp.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” Shedeur replied. “I’m here not to talk about Pops and them. I’m here (to be) quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.”

No drama. No distractions. Just a clear boundary... and then right back to football.

That answer might not satisfy every headline-chaser, but it’s the kind of composure that Cleveland is expecting to see at quarterback this season and beyond. And it’s not just talk. In camp drills, Sanders reportedly went 10-for-12 with two touchdowns and no interceptions. That’s an 83% completion rate that impressed teammates and coaches alike.

Sanders gets praise from teammates

Cornerback Greg Newsome II summed it up after Tuesday’s session: “I think his dad has really taught him how to be that guy in the spotlight and understand what comes with it.”

That spotlight has never been easy to escape when your father is Prime Time himself. But Sanders Jr is suggesting that he can control the narrative – whether it’s handling reporters, executing red zone throws, or simply staying locked in on the playbook.

Barring a dramatic shift, Sanders won’t be QB1 on opening day. But if he can keep impressing on and off the field of play, he is building his case for a future leadership role in Cleveland. Dad will be proud.
