Concern over largest fast food restaurant chain: has closed 7,600 US locations since 2016, more than 600 last year

Subway is the fast-food restaurant franchise with by far the most locations in the United States - but the number has dropped dramatically over the past decade.

According to franchise disclosure documents, Subway had 20,603 locations nationwide in 2023, but the chain was operating 19,502 restaurants by the end of last year.

Subway downsizes

For eight years running, the chain’s number of US locations has dropped. Subway now has two thirds of the number of locations it had during its peak years. 2014-2016. Nevertheless, it remains the largest restaurant chain in America, with more locations than Starbucks (16,346) and McDonald’s (13,457).

A company spokesperson told CNN that Subway is “opening new restaurants as well as relocating or closing locations as needed, to ensure a consistent, high-quality and convenient guest experience.”

Subway sales dip

In 2024, the company reported $9.5 billion in system sales nationwide - down 3.8% from the previous year ($9.98 billion), but otherwise, the sandwich chain’s sales have increased overall by around 20 percent over the past five years.

Compared to its competitors, Subway has generally performed very well and finished last year eighth the ranking for annual revenue just behind Dunkin’ and Burger King.

Apart from closing locations, Subway is also turning its focus to brand value as it attempts to attract customers who are looking for cheaper options. This week, the chain announced a range of new deals - including their famous $6.99 Any Footlong deal until the end of the month (via the app only).
